Travel Guide: Magnetic Island, Australia

By Sashi Ohara

This little slice of heaven holds some serious beauty. You don’t need a lot of time here if you’re hopping from place to place – I’d say 2 or 3 days would do the trick! If you’d like more beach and snorkel time, then extend it for a week! I stayed at Base Camp Hostel that has a mix of dorm rooms and private bungalows. It’s a great mix of ocean font views and party!

The island itself isn’t walking distance to get around. Most people rent a truck or take the bus around the island. You can also arrange day tours with your hostel if you’d prefer that as well! From ocean views from the beach to ocean views from the highest view point, Magnetic Island is something really special!

Things to Do in Magnetic Island

  1. Rent a 4 Wheel Drive:
    • Cost: $100AUD for 24 Hours
    • Meet some new people and convince them to rent a car with you for the day! That’s what I did, and it was a great deal! I would go for the 4 wheel drive cars especially if you’d like to head to West Point for the sunset.
  2. Rent a Barbie Car:
    • Cost: $80-$100AUD from 8AM-5Pm

• The other car rental option, and most of the time the preferred one! A lot of people like             this car because it’s cute, it’s pink, and instagram goes crazy for it. I think it sells itself                 by being call the “Barbie” car. Think ’80s. The only downside to this car is that it’s not 4             Wheel Drive, so getting to certain parts of the island is prohibited.3

3. Forts Walk, Magnetic Island National Park:
• Take a walk through the National Park on Magnetic Island to the old forts. They make               for beautiful view points all over the island. Also, make sure to keep an eye on the                         trees!  You’ll definitely spot a few kuala’s taking a nap! Most people use sticks they find               laying   around to draw an arrow on the path to notify other hikers where to look up at                 the kuala. Be like a local and help out if you spot one too!

4.Geoffrey Bay:
• Rock Wallabies for dayssss. Head to Geoffrey bay with some of the rock wallabies                       favorite snacks to feed to them! Head over to the rocky area and you’ll be able to spot                   them all. They look like mini kangaroos with long tails. Weird combo, but these little                   guys are adorable and very friendly!

5. Snorkeling:
• Cost: $20AUD from 8AM-5PM
• Can’t make it up to Cairns? That’s okay, scuba & snorkeling is all around on Magnetic!              The best deal in my opinion was the rent some snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, stinger suit,              and fins), through them in the trunk of my rental car, and drive around to the best                        spots on the island!

6.West Point for Sunset:
• If the weather permits, you will see one epic sunset on West Point beach. You do need a              4 wheel drive to get you here though! It’s a ways of a walk. Hop in a car with some                       friends and make your way down with some beers. Best way to end a beautiful day!

7.Horseshoe Bay Market:
• Hours: 9AM-2PM
• A quaint and friendly market located on Horseshoe Bay Beach. Pretty small but has                    some great gifts and little nick naks to bring home for yourself or friends/family!

Horseshoe Bay is also a great beach to hang out on for the day with plenty of water activities, bars and restaurants. Enjoy a day on this side of the island!
