Travel Guide: Melbourne, Australia

By Sashi Ohara

Rated one of the most livable cities in the world, and that is definitely true. I almost cancelled all my future flights to stay and shack up here for a while. Melbourne is good. SO good.

Definitely not a place to miss when you make your journey to OZ. It has a great mix of beach, city life, quaint suburbs, and young nightlife. One of my favorite pieces of advice when I took myself on a walking tour throughout the city was to “look up”. I may have looked crazy, but it was worth it. The architecture in this city is a beautiful combination of modern meets classic. Spend your days walking around and admiring the city before heading out to the Left Bank for great Happy Hour cocktails and food!

Warning! There are two airports in Melbourne. I foolishly made the mistake of showing up to the wrong airport and tried getting on the plane anyway. High five for the win!

The bus from the Airport into the city costs 19AUD each way. It takes you to the main train station in the center of the city where you can easily hop on the tram, or take the train out to a different destination!

What to do in Melbourne

St.Kilda:

Beach town Party town Paradise. St.Kilda is the young and hip area of Melbourne. It also is known for having one too many junkies too, so just keep an eye out for the sketchy ones. Great place to go to hang at the beach, great some delicious food, or dance in a club until 6AM!

Getting Here: Simple! Hop on the tram heading towards St.Kilda and get off where you think is most convenient to your destination. Getting off around Luna Park brings you to the center area, and gives you the chance to check out the famous Luna Park!

Luna Park

Fitzroy:
Great area if you’re looking for some great vintage finds!

Hozier Lane:

You can’t go to Melbourne and NOT make your way to Hozier Lane. This cobble stone street has buildings that are covered from top to bottom in beautifully done graffiti art. If you notice some all black walls, don’t panic and think that the city is ruining the art. They’re actually just making room for some new talent to express themselves!

Walking Tour & Free Tram:

This was a great thing to when I first arrived in Melbourne. It helped to get my bearings in the city and, in my opinion, see the city in the best way! I love walking around cities and a walking tour & free tram rides made it a great success. Head to the information center outside of Flinders Street station to grab a map and ask one of the friendly volunteers to give you some tips!

Queen Vic Market:

Open 6AM-2PM, the Queen Market has it all. Farmers Market meets food trucks meets garage sale meets quaint shops.  From great tasting food to the perfect nick nack to bring home as a gift, it’s a great way to spend your morning!

Great Ocean Road:

Those who choose to take part in this drive down one of the most scenic roads in the world never walk away disappointed. If you have the time and the extra spending money, this is a must do! The long, empty stretches of beach, crashing surf, and beautiful cliffs will keep you mesmerized. Hop in a car and drive yourself or cruise along in a bus tour! Congratulations, if you were searching for that epic road trip on your travels, you’ve found them.

Cost: $130-$250 AUD
