What I Learned From 2020
2020, What year
A year filled with a whirlwind of events. The pandemic came in like a wrecking ball…canceling our plans and basically our year. There were many losses of which also divided our country politically and separated loved ones physically.
As life has taught me, humans do their best to adapt because life carries on. So that’s what I did my best to do. But it was not easy.
I cried so many times because I couldn’t see my family for months! Knowing they were a 3 days worth of a road trip away stunk. Not to mention, being confined with one person isn’t good for any relationships. My boyfriend and I worked side by side, bickering over being too loud on our zoom meetings. Oh and we also had Covid for 3 weeks…
I definitely felt lonely at times. Which I know is shared feeling across the globe.
The Rain Makes You Appreciate the Sunshine
Although 2020 is leaving us all scared, I always do my best to appreciate what I do have. There’s always a silver lining. Here are mine.
About 9 months before the pandemic struck, I was very bitter about moving from London to Miami. Having seen that London is still in lock down, and New York (where I’m from) had so much chaos, I was grateful to be in a warm state, close to the water with more lax regulations.
I feel for NY as businesses and people are fleeing the city to migrate to Florida, but I’m grateful for more opportunities here. It may sound weird, but with more New Yorkers here, I feel a bit more at home.
The migration of new money to Miami is also a great opportunity to capitalize and be smart with my money. Being in Wealth Management, I preach saving for a rainy days when work isn’t steady but also maximizing on large market dips. It’s wise to save at least six months of salary just incase you run into a slight hiccup. Additionally, refinancing when interest rates are low like today and reviewing your overhead is always a great exercise. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with people so they can be more secure for unforeseen situations like this.
Most importantly, I understand that being healthy and keeping my immune system strong is a lesson I constantly have to apply to my life. Otherwise, I would miss out on the most important part of life which is spending precious moments with my loved ones. As a result, I actually bought myself disability insurance because I want to be semi financially secure in events that I’m unable to work. I think this is more valuable then life insurance because you need to cover your expenses while living.
During this time, I have made a lot of my 2020 memories working from home or remotely. In that time, I discovered new ways to exercise at home and enjoy slowing down. Although I watched a lot of Netflix, I worked on two licenses (series 65 & Digital Asset Cert) and invested into self-care.
I am very curious about what the new year will bring me. I hope it’s a pandemic-free world, more self-care, and lots of traveling!
