Virtual Interview Tips

In 2021, an unimaginable amount of  businesses closed and hundreds of thousands of people were unemployed. Thanks, Pandemic.

Now, life is about getting the workforce safely back to work…

With Biden’s  Infrastructure plan, the U.S. is expected to see a hiring surge in multiple industries. Working in finance I see many new innovations & growth arising in areas such as  Cannabis & Psychedelics, AI,  Space Travel, 3D printing, Blockchain & Crypto, FinTech, Longevity etc. When the cheese moves, try to find it elsewhere in expanding industries such as these.

If you’re open to a move, migrate with the businesses moving to Florida & Texas. It could be a great move if you’re looking for a fresh start. Ooo Sounds exciting!

I’ve done my fair share of interviews and interviewing, so I  feel qualified enough to tell you my tips on Interviewing…

TIP #1 – Know the Online Platform

Many companies are using video chat software to conduct interviews. It’s the Virtual Era! So, make sure you know exactly what they’re using so you can easily navigate the system when it comes to the big interview day.

I encourage you to have an appropriate virtual background and definitely good lighting. When it comes to lighting, the rule of thumb is  don’t sit with your back to the light. The lighting should be in front of you. I recommend buying something like these to ensure you are properly equipped.

Also, please don’t be that person that is cutting off half your face or not looking at the camera.

Tip #2 – Maintain a Confident Demeanor

Since we aren’t beginning the interview  with the “handshake test” be assertive in saying hello. Be confident; by speaking loudly & clearly with purpose. Find ways to connect with them virtually by commenting on something visible on their end or even their choice of background.

Tip #3 – Take Notes

Start taking notes before the interview. Study the company’s website, read about their management team and understand who their competitors & clients are.  Jotting down information on the company along with prepping your questions sets you up for success.  Such preparation builds confidence too!

During the interview,  take notes on the conversation using word or notes. If you want to be even more tech savvy, ask if  you can record the conversations so you can focus on our meeting rather than notes.

Tip #4 – Ask Questions!

Don’t be afraid to interview them as well. Have your list of questions and ask additional from what they tell you. In a way it shows great characteristics and negotiation skills when someone knows what type of career lifestyle & compensation they want.

When you ask questions, employers could interpret it as a stronger interest in to co. & that you understand the role well  & capable enough to commit.

Tip #5 – Prepare Your Elevator Pitch

Make sure that you’re prepared to tell your potential employer, why you’d like to work for their company, your interest in the position, and what makes you stand out from the rest of the candidates.

Tip #6 – Research the Company

As touched on before,  know the company you’ll be interviewing with so that you can connect with the interviewer and ask the right questions.  Things to research:

  • Google News to see recent press releases on projects, management etc. You can mention these in passing or go in meeting with synergies based on something you saw.
  • Skim the entire Website
  • Scroll through their social media & employee reviews on
  • Google them vs their competitors. Honestly, you never know it that leads you to even more opportunities in the same industry.
  • Linkedin the management. Be sure to connect with those you have conversed with prior & who you are scheduled to meet with. Skim their past as well.
